This is an informal community for chat about Yuletide, which was started up by participants and has now (2017) been passed over to mods. Official announcements are given at [community profile] yuletide_admin and [livejournal.com profile] yuletide_admin (which has a feed at [syndicated profile] yuletide_admin_feed).

This is intended to be a Dreamwidth equivalent of [livejournal.com profile] yuletide.

In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat amongst yourselves.

Well, in

Angela Merkel won a fourth term as Chancellor in Germany, though the far-Right party AfD did worrying well, with 12.6% of the vote. Though in a move worthy of UKIP or a Tory Party leadership contest, one of the co-leaders (and the apparently somewhat more moderate figure) walked out of the post-election press conference saying she would not sit with the party in the Bundestag. Uncertain times ahead.

In the US, the Apricot Hellbeast has managed another deflection of attention (From little things like six senior members of his staff being found to use private e-mail servers, something which the Republicans endlessly excoriated Clinton for), by making comments some wildly inappropriate comments (especially for a PoTUS) criticising those who choose to kneel for the National Anthem as a visible protest against racial inequality and police brutality.

In Arizona, their Supreme Court ruled that in the case of a lesbian married couple who divorced, both women had parental rights which should be respected. It's a little more complicated than that, but nice recognition.

And the US Marines got their first female infantry officer.

I'm ashamed to say I realised too late that last week was Bisexual Visibility week, and I didn't post a single damn thing about it. Sorry about that, Bi Community members! Anyone up for some postings to compensate?

Star Trek Discovery debuted, and I have to say I was very impressed by it. Yes, the tech doesn't line up with the fact it's pre-TOS, and another unexplained retcon of Klingon appearance is bound to throw some people off, but the cast were impressive (Seriously, Sonequa Martin and Michelle Yeoh were bloody awesome and Doug Jones worked well too!), but it made sense to do a soft reboot of the tech fifty years into the franchise and ANYTHING which tries to make the Klingons interesting again has my vote. It's a slow burn, but one worth checking out.

Theresa May gave a speech on Brexit (Or as one wag has dubbed it, "Operation Enduring Clusterfuck") last week in Florence, which managed to be non-committal on everything, even being non-committal, which is quite an achievement, sort of.

But, in an amazing exmaple of shooting oneself in the foot, the Labour Party decided not to discuss Brexit at all at their Annual Conference, which has raised a hell of a lot of eyebrows.

But to end things off on an upbeat note Puppies!

Crisis on Infinite Earths #4

"There were several problems at DC at the time. Sales were bad (they're bad now but the entire industry sales are bad) and Marvel readers wouldn't be caught dead reading DC comics. I felt, as did many, that although DC fans understood the multiple Earths perfectly and without trouble, it was a problem to attract new readers and possibly a sign of a DC problem for the Marvel zombies. By simplifying the DC universe I believed we could attract new readers, which we did. Crisis was one of the first DC Comics (Titans being the other) that Marvel readers would check out."

The idea here is to organize a gift exchange designed for Marvel and its many branched runs, authors, related and unrelated fandoms. The idea is to include the X-Men side and the Avengers side and every other side that non-Marvel fans don't realize is Marvel. The idea is to include any timeline you want, any world you want, any character you want, so long as it's Marvel.

“Some really good people are working on Before Watchmen and it saddens me to see that. I won’t be supporting it in any way. I just can’t. And in all honesty — I can’t help but feel a little bit less for every creator who works on these books. Have you no decency?” -- Erik Larsen

Groo - Friends and Foes #4 (2015)

Dark Horse: "The Year of Groo marches on, as Groo marches right into Arcadio the Hero. Arcadio’s in the protection business, teaching villagers how to protect themselves from dragons . . . but he should be teaching them to protect themselves from Groo! Feather-brained barbarian thrills from the award-winning team of Sergio Aragonés and Mark Evanier, with Stan Sakai and Tom Luth."

Do you know what happens when you take a baby dragon from his mother? )

Arcadio is my least favourite recurring character in Groo. He is a take on the legends and lore of medieval heroes, but I think that Groo makes him redundant somehow.

Next up: Groo's sister, Queen Grooella!

The narrative behind these things changes all the time. And what fascinates me especially is how people who espouse different versions of the legends can appear on the same bill together at UFO conventions and not argue. These are sometimes mutually exclusive theories! As a body of fiction, this is fascinating. The fact that that fiction actually contains some people's real experience is doubly fascinating. This is all the stuff we'll be exploring. -- Paul Cornell

To start Monday morning off with some sort-of comic news, they've finally announced who will be voicing the Ray in the forthcoming "Crisis on Earth X" crossover event for the various DC TV series.

This is a little bigger than some news, since the Ray will be the first gay male hero that the DCTVU (There must be an easier name for it than that) has featured;

The Ray will debut in the crossover (which will also include Arrow, Supergirl, Flash and the Legends of Tomorrow team), before getting a four episode animated series "Freedom Fighters: The Ray", and will be played by openly gay British actor Russell Tovey, best known perhaps, aside from an appearance in Doctor Who as Midshipman Alonzo Fraim in "Voyage of the Damned" (And later making a brief cameo as a potential new boyfriend for Captain Jack in "The End of Time") as George, a werewolf in the supernatural comedy-drama "Being Human" (The UK version that is).

Some promotional art was put together by Phil Jimenez, in the style of the old multiple Earth crossover covers to publicise the event, which also hints that it will take place around the wedding (or not) of Barry Allen and Iris West.

(Click to embiggen)

Now, understandably, there has been some eyebrows raised at the decision, in the current political climate in the US, to make the Arrowverse/Supergirl crossover be based around Earth-X; the DC Earth where the Nazi's won World War II, and where we will see several Nazi versions of established heroes, so we'll have to see how THAT is handled (Secret Empire is a low bar to clear, but here's hoping)

As a geeky aside; Earth-X debuted in 1973, when WW was less than 30 years finished, as a separate home for a number of Quality Comics characters DC had acquired, like Uncle Sam, the Human Bomb, Doll Man, the Ray and Phantom Lady. They were folded into the WWII heroes following Crisis on Infinite Earths, though more modern takes on them have surfaced a time or two in the last couple of decades.

Fics written for the purpose of re-qualifying for Yuletide must be posted before signing up to Yuletide 2017 (ie, before October 9 and ideally before October 1). You have two weeks! They must also be over 1,000 words and written to a previous Yuletide prompt. The fandom in which they are written must still be small enough to qualify for Yuletide (in brief: there are fewer than 1,000 fics each (that are over 1,000 words, in English, and complete) when adding the total fics on AO3 and ff.net).
